Finn Harps suffered their first defeat of the pre-season friendly campaign on Friday night losing 3-0 to Derry City at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. Ollie Horgan’s outfit started slowly and paid the price as the hosts grabbed three first half goals courtesy of Adrian Delap, Eoin Toal and Patrick McClean.
Horgan made his way to Letterkenny’s Mount Errigal Hotel immediately after the game where he was presented with Donegal Sports Star ‘Coach of the Year’Award. Speaking at that event the Harps boss said the result and performance meant his players now know the scale of the challenge ahead of them in the Premier Division which starts with an away fixture against Bohemians at Dalymount Park on Friday, February 15th.
“I said in my comments before the Derry game that it was going to be a big step up from the previous three friendly matches. We were punished early on with that first goal and when you concede like that against a team of Derry’s quality it’s very hard get back into game. We did have a couple of openings but their second and third goals before half-time put getting a result a way beyond our reach. We’ll regroup but the lads definitely know now what’s ahead of them in the Premier Division.”
Harps will return to training at the beginning of the week and have another friendly fixture next Saturday against Drogheda Utd at United Park (kick-off 1.00).
