Harps Defeated at Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium

Derry City 4-0 Finn Harps

Finn Harps returned to the foot of the League of Ireland Premier Division table after losing to North West neighbours Derry City at Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Friday night. Ciaron Harkin was the star of the show for the Candystripes with a hat-trick in a game where the visitors again conceded a couple of poor goals. Just after the half-hour mark Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe gave the hosts the lead scoring from the rebound after Peter Burke had saved the striker’s penalty which had been given by referee Thomas Connolly, having deemed that Daniel O”Reilly was guilty of a push.

It was Derry’s first win in six games while it was back-to-back Harps defeats for Ollie Horgan’s side and means that they go back to bottom on goal difference from UCD who lost 1-0 to Waterford Utd at the RSC on Friday night. Harps have shipped seven goals in the last two matches which has allowed the Students to move off the basement.

Defender Josh Kerr should have done better with an early Derry chance while at the other end on 29 minutes Tony McNamee’s long throw-in saw Peter Cherrie struggle to get a fist on the ball allowing Daniel O’Reilly to get in a header that forced Eoin Toal into conceding a corner.

City took the lead on 32 minutes  as Ogedi-Uzokwe’s reacted quickest after his penalty was saved by Burke, to steer the rebound into the net. Ogedi-Uzokwe then had a goal disallowed but Declan Devine’s side did double their advantage before the interval when Ciaron Harkin’s splendid free-kick arrowed into the top right-hand corner of the Harps net.

After the break Ogedi-Uzokwe saw his shot cleared off the line by Sam Todd. Poor defending led to the third Derry goal on 67 minutes and Harkin took advantage to place the ball low and neatly past Burke. With two minutes of normal time remaining Harps substitute Nathan Boyle was denied by Cherrie before in the closing stages of injury time Harkin completed his hat-trick after being setup by Aidy Delap.
