Experimental side lose out to Galway in preseason opener

Galway United 2 - 0 Finn Harps

Finn Harps kicked off their 2020 pre-season with a useful outing against Galway United at Ballisodare United grounds in Sligo on Tuesday night.
Given a great welcome in a superb facility on the outskirts of Sligo town, Harps lost out 2-0 to a strong Galway United side courtesy of goals from Conor Barry and a thunderbolt strike from former Harps’ striker Mikey Place who joined the Tribesmen last month.

Making their first appearance in a Harps jersey were new signings Ryan Connolly and Karl O’Sullivan who both got valuable game time ahead of the new season kicking off in little over three weeks time at home to Sligo Rovers on Friday 14th February.

The largely experimental Harps side managed a solid first half performance, the scores sitting at 0-0 at half time with little in the way of chances for both sides who were content to keep the ball and build up the match fitness.

Ollie Horgan rang in the changes at half time which allowed a number of the younger Harps contingent to get a run out in the second half, and the Harps management will be pleased with the performances of some of the less experienced members of the squad.

Galway took the lead shortly before the hour mark when Conor Barry was played through the Harps defence to slot under the onrushing Mark McGinley in the Harps goal.

Former Harps’ striker Mikey Place was introduced at half time for Galway and he made his presence known on 70 minutes when he unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner, a real treat for around 150 people in attendance.

Harps had their own chances and could have pulled one back but for the alert Kevin Horgan in the Galway goal, who had to be on his toes to stop a wicked 20 yard drive from Ryan Connolly with fifteen minutes left to play.

A useful run out for Harps who have a quick 24 hour turnaround and face Derry City tonight in the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium before taking on UCD at the Belfield Bowl on Friday night.
